Dr. Louvros Spiros graduated from Physics Department, University of Crete, with major field in Applied Microelectronics & Lasers, specialization (minor field) in quantum electronics. He followed post graduate studies (Master of Science – Msc) in Department of Electronic System Design & Telecommunications (ESD&T), Section of Aviation Electronics in the School of Aeronautics & Aerospace Engineering, University of Cranfield UK. During his post graduate studies he was been awarded with two years full scholarship from Alexandros Onassis Foundation for Post Graduate studies in Western Europe due to academic excellence. Since 2004 holds PhD Diploma in Signal Processing Laboratory, Section of Electronics & Information Technology, Physics Department, University of Patras in the research field of Teletraffic Mathematical Modeling and QoS on network performance optimization in 3G cellular networks.

Dr. Louvros has extensive experience both Academic & Industrial. Since 2006, holds the position of senior Ericsson/Teledrom certified Telecom consultant Engineer in the area of 3G/LTE Micro cellular planning and interoperability in Radio Access Network (RAN) Engineering in Stockholm, Sweden. His duties include webinars consultancy, technical courses-seminars delivery and preparation, 3GPP presentations and technical repors author, Radio Access Network (RAN) consultancy on WCDMA-LTE planning, optimizing and tuning/configuring radio parameters. Lately (2013-2014) is collaborating with R&D of Teledrom to develop applications on Big Data and correlating data for Software and Telecom applications

In 1996 worked as a MW planning and Optimizing Engineer in Siemens TELE S.A. in Athens and from 1997 up to 1998 has held the position of Senior BSS Switching Engineer in Vodafon Hellas S.A., department of Network Operational & Maintenance. In 1998 up to 2006 joined Cosmote S.A and participated in many positions as a BSS Switching Engineer, Radio Network Planner and Optimizer, Quality Assurance Engineer, project manager for Athens Olympic Games 2004 (GSM-UMTS interoperability performance) and finally as a section manager in the section of Network QoS Assurance and Expansion.

Dr. Louvros Spiros, since 2006, holds part time Academic research position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Telecommunication Systems & Networks, Technological Educational Insitute of Western Greece. He provides post graduate lectures on Wireless Networks, Cellular networks, Broadband networks and conducting also basic research on LTE indoor & outdoor planning, LTE to UMTS interoperability modeling and performance optimization. 3
He has participated in national and international research projects and his research interests focus onto wireless network modeling & performance optimization, Wireless networks Radio Access Capacity Planning and Dimentioning (WCDMA & LTE), HSPA/LTE interoperability optimization and finally on Wireless Visible Light Communications (VLC) applications for LTE indoor small cell coverage and mobility. He holds several papers into international conferences and journals, book chapters in international publication houses, his papers have been cited by international researchers and he is an active reviewer into international journals (Springer Verlang, Elsevier, C&EE, ΙΕΕΕ). He is also a member of IEEE society, Hellenic IEEE Communications Chapter, FITCE.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH
Research interests

Wireless Communications: Wireless communications are a very interesting and dynamic research field. Specifically connected to the Mobile Network Industry and the needs of Mobile 6 Operator networks, this is a vivid and expanding field. Main interest is focused on physical layer performance, radio channel modeling and diversity techniques as countermeasures to Interference and performance degradation. Special interest is focused on MIMO solutions and Multicarrier – Multiantenna future solutions for operator networks.


Wireless networks modeling & performance optimization: Nowadays wireless networks imply a state of the art research field. Following 3GPP and IEEE standards, teletraffic mathematical theory has several applications into wireless network modeling and performance optimization. Main research focus is on physical and MAC scheduler layer performance; however cross-layer optimization is of extreme importance for existing networks (LTE, HSPA, WiMAX) and also for future enhancements. Applied mathematical models are studied and applied on the basis of QoS performance optimization. Moreover statistical analysis and KPI’s are the major focus, helping Mobile Operators to expand their network and optimize its performance in real multiservice, multilayer and multitechnology environments. Based on prediction models certain rules of thumb and parameter configurations are proposed to real network implementations for HSPA/LTE interoperability optimization.


Wireless networks Capacity Planning and Dimensioning: Cellular Operators and vendors are very much interested on network planning and dimentioning processes to improve network capacity and throughput performances. Radio environment and channel conditions are very difficult to predict due to dynamic changes and user mobility. Teletraffic mathematical models are the basis for simulation and practical tools to apply to capacity planning processes and dimentioning ideas. Research topics include LTE and WCDMA/HSPA dimentioning mathematical models based on n-dimentional higher order Markov queues, capacity channel predictions based on interference fluctuations and finally on simulation results. Special research is performed on user mobility models based on statistical physics principles of max entropy.


Wireless Visible Light Communications (VLC): The last decade, solid state technology illumination with Light Emitting Diodes (LED) has been developed and found increasing market growth, because it reduces significant power consumption together with expanding architectural capabilities. Visible light wireless communication efforts, specifically with Light Emitting Diodes (LED), for indoor spaces have gained great interest lately and have already been included in standardisation activities (IEEE 802.15). Such wireless transmission network tends to propose a green wireless network with many advantages as power consumption reduction, increase of life duration, zero emission of GHz, ultraviolet and infrared radiation, and maintenance cost reduction. Research activities focus on the development of a complete cellular telecom wireless network with mobility functionality by building the appropriate software and hardware modules. Several open research study areas are the development of a portable handset receiver, complete theoretical and practical study of the optical wireless channel, development of an end-to-end telecommunication prototype (transceiver), development of parametrised mobility algorithms, setting the standards and developing network and handsets inter-operability and finally VLC implementation scenario for LTE indoor small cell coverage.
