Research Project Management Activities

Project Manager & As. Technical Coordinator of EU-Funded “ADAMANTIUM” project
Dr. Harilaos Koumaras from the beginning of the EU-Funded ADAMANTIUM project has been acted as project manager and technical coordinator
2008 – 2010

Research activities in EU national funded projects

2011 – … : Elected by European Commission as reviewer of EU-funded research projects
European Commission has elected Dr. Koumaras as an expert on multimedia issues and cloud computing and reviewer of currently active EU-funded projects and proposals.

Participation in the EU Funded project “VITAL”
http://www.ict-vital.eu/
2015 – 2017
H2020 644843
VITAL (VIrtualized hybrid satellite-TerrestriAl systems for resilient and fLexible future networks) is an ambitious project addressing the combination of Terrestrial and Satellite networks by pursuing two key innovation areas, by bringing Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) into the satellite domain and by enabling Software-Defined-Networking (SDN)-based, federated resources management in hybrid SatCom-terrestrial networks

Participation in the European Space Agency (ESA) Funded project “CloudSAT”
https://artes.esa.int/projects/cloudsat
2014 – 2016
During the last years, the telecom/network community is pursuing a paradigm shift towards the virtualisation/ “softwarisation” of infrastructure components, enabling a novel “cloud networking” model, which allows the flexible management of network resources and functionalities in a cloud-like manner. Future networks are envisaged to consist of heterogeneous wireless and wired physical infrastructures, whose resources are abstracted via virtualisation mechanisms, unified, dynamically pooled and offered as-a-Service to multiple tenants.

Participation in the EU Funded project “T-NOVA”
http://www.t-nova.eu/
FP7 ICT- 619520
2014 – 2016
With the aim of promoting the NFV concept, T-NOVA introduces a novel enabling framework, allowing operators not only to deploy virtualized Network Functions (NFs) for their own needs, but also to offer them to their customers, as value-added services. Virtual network appliances (gateways, proxies, firewalls, transcoders, analyzers etc.) can be provided on-demand as-a-Service, eliminating the need to acquire, install and maintain specialized hardware at customers’ premises.

Participation in the EU Funded project “GERYON”
FP7 ICT- 248652
2011 – 2014
Nowadays there is a growing uncertainty about the near future evolution of classical PMR solutions due to spectrum scarcity, digital dividend issues and economic crisis. GERYON aims at facing this situation by seizing the existing window of opportunity due to the convergence of the IMS as a predominant enabler for future multimedia networks and the imminent deployment of commercial LTE networks.
